Un catalogue collectif mondial en ligne est un catalogue collectif utilisé et/ou alimenté par des milliers de bibliothèques et centres de documentation. Le catalogue collectif mondial le plus connu est WorldCat, créé dès 1971 par l’association OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) et devenu au fil des ans une gigantesque base de données bibliographiques. Un autre grand catalogue collectif mondial est le RLG Union Catalog, créé en 1980 par le RLG (Research Library Group, qui devient ensuite Research Libraries Group). Une version web de ce catalogue, appelée RedLightGreen, est mise en accès libre au printemps 2004, avec une version bêta disponible dès l’automne 2003. WorldCat migre aussi sur le web en août 2006, en version bêta, et propose en accès libre non seulement les catalogues des bibliothèques membres mais aussi leurs documents électroniques (livres, articles, photos, musique, vidéos, livres audio). Après trois ans d’activité, RedLightGreen cesse en novembre 2006, et le RLG est intégré à OCLC. -

Créé en 1971 par l’association OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) pour permettre un catalogage partagé entre les bibliothèques universitaires de l’Ohio (Etat des Etats-Unis), WorldCat devient au fil des ans l’un des deux grands catalogues collectifs mondiaux (l’autre étant RedLightGreen, anciennement RLG Union Catalog, géré entre 1980 et 2006 par le Research Libraries Group, qui rejoint ensuite OCLC). Disponible sur abonnement payant, WorldCat comprend en 1998 38 millions de notices en 370 langues, avec translittération pour les caractères non romains des langues JACKPHY. L’accroissement annuel est de 2 millions de notices. WorldCat utilise huit formats bibliographiques correspondant aux catégories suivantes: livres, périodiques, documents visuels, cartes et plans, documents mixtes, enregistrements sonores, partitions, documents informatiques. En 2005, 61 millions de notices bibliographiques produites par 9.000 bibliothèques et centres de documentation sont disponibles dans 400 langues. En 2006, 73 millions de notices provenant de 10.000 bibliothèques dans 112 pays permettent de localiser un milliard de documents. Une notice type contient non seulement la description du document mais aussi des informations sur son contenu: table des matières, résumé, couverture, illustrations et courte biographie de l’auteur. WorldCat migre progressivement sur le web, tout d’abord en rendant la consultation des notices possible par le biais de plusieurs moteurs de recherche (Yahoo!, Google et bien d’autres), puis avec le lancement en août 2006 de la version web (bêta) de WorldCat en accès libre.
